Photography:

Photo: Hard at work- A2
Critique the photo in 2-3 sentences, include in your writing something about the lighting, the impact of the photo on the page, the impact of the photo on the story it goes with.
The photo is in black and white, so that makes it harder to tell how well the lighting was, but you can see every object and it's not too dark or too light, so I'd say that the lighting was very good. This photo has a big impact on the page because it's one of the larger photos, so your eye is drawn to it. It also has a large impact on the story that goes with it because it shows what the story is talking about, a search for a new principal.

What rule of composition do you see in the photo?
The only rule of composition that sort of works with this photo is viewpoint.
What or who is the main subject?
The main subject is Interim principal Susan Leos
Is the photo exposed properly?
The photo is exposed properly
Do you see evidence of a shallow or deep depth of field?
This photo has evidence of a deep depth of field.

This photo is also in black and white, but I think that the lighting was good because nothing is too dark or too dark. This photo has a large impact on the page because it's the biggest photo. This photo also has a big impact on the story that it goes with because it describes what the story is talking about, Dawson Warnken working to improve his times.

What rule of composition do you see in the photo?
I saw leading lines (the lines on the weight rack and bar of the weight), and viewpoint (the angle that the photo was taken at).
What or who is the main subject?
The main subject is Dawson Warken.
Is the photo exposed properly?
The photo was exposed properly.

Photo: Practice Makes Perfect- B7
Critique the photo in 2-3 sentences, include in your writing something about the lighting, the impact of the photo on the page, the impact of the photo on the story it goes with.
This photo is also in black and white, but I can tell that the lighting was done very well. This photo is the biggest photo, so it definitely does catch your eye and make a big impact on the page. This photo greatly impacts the story that it goes with because it shows what the story is talking about, Matthew Lane continuing to get better and practicing with his yo-yo.

What rule of composition do you see in the photo?
The rule of composition that I see in this photo is simplicity (nothing in the background).
What or who is the main subject?
The main subject is the yo-yo.
Is the photo exposed properly?
The photo is exposed properly.
Do you see evidence of a shallow or deep depth of field?

Photo: Running through her routine- A8
Critique the photo in 2-3 sentences, include in your writing something about the lighting, the impact of the photo on the page, the impact of the photo on the story it goes with.
The lighting wasn't too great in this photo because it's kind of dark. The impact of the photo on the page wasn't that great because all the photos look pretty similar, and this is a smaller photo. This image does impact the story it goes with because it's about what the story is about, Kate Stubbs doing gymnastics.

What rule of composition do you see in the photo?
One rule that kind of works is rule of thirds, because her head fits that rule.
What or who is the main subject?
The main subject is Kate Stubbs.
Is the photo exposed properly?
The photo isn't exposed properly.
Do you see evidence of a shallow or deep depth of field?
There is evidence of a deep depth of field.

Photo: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun(damental Human Rights)- B8
Critique the photo in 2-3 sentences, include in your writing something about the lighting, the impact of the photo on the page, the impact of the photo on the story it goes with.
The lighting in this photo is good, because it's not too dark or too light. The impact of the photo on the page is great because it's what my eyes are drawn to. The impact of the photo on the story is great because it shows what the story is about, standing up for rights for women.

What rule of composition do you see in the photo?
I see balance (the subject and sign are even on both sides) in this photo.
What or who is the main subject?
The main subject is the woman holding up the sign.
Is the photo exposed properly?
The photo is exposed properly.
Do you see evidence of a shallow or deep depth of field?
I see evidence of a shallow depth of field.

Conclusion:

What is your favorite photo in the entire paper?
My favorite photo in the entire paper is Practice Makes Perfect on B7.
Why is this your favorite? This is my favorite photo because I like how it's black and white, the simplicity of the photo, and I like how well it was taken.
What rules of photo composition are evident?
There's only one main rule of composition that's evident, and that's simplicity.
What is your least favorite photo in the entire paper?
My least favorite photo in the entire paper is Across the Floor on A8.
Why is this your least favorite?
This is my least favorite photo because the lighting isn't good, and there aren't really any rules of photography that are evident.

If you were a photographer on staff, which event/photo assignment would you have liked to do for this issue? You will need to look through the entire paper and see the topics covered and decide which one you think would have been fun.
I would've liked to do the Day in a Life; Student Gymnast page/story because I think it would've been fun to go to a gym and watch the gymnast perform complicated routines while taking pictures of them doing so.

Overall, how would you rate the photography in this issue? What were the strong points and weak points, write 2-3 sentences.
I would rate the photography in this issue as a 3/5. The strong points were that they got coverage, but the weak points are that the photos aren't all great because they need to work on getting the lighting better.

Intro to Newspaper Design- Front Pages of the World

1) My favorite newspaper front page is the Watertown Daily News in New York. This is my favorite because I like that there's a variety of stories and pictures, and that the design isn't too crazy.
2) My favorite headline is "Dangerous Rescue" and I'm interested in it because it catches your eye and makes you want to read the story.
3) There are four stories on this front page.
4) All the newspapers have the same relative amount of writing and pictures. They also all have a similar design.
5) Some things that vary are the types of font, size of the font, and size of the headlines.

1) I like the top of our newspaper better than the other newspapers I looked at. I like that it isn't so crowded, which makes it look more professional. I also like that there are less stories, meaning that there's more information in the stories.
2) The headlines and the infographics stand out to me in our newspaper.
3) I found the school evaluations, gymnastics, high schoolers can fall in love, and horse back riding stories interesting.
4) I'd don't think that there's much that this newspaper needs to improve on because it's so good already.
5) This newspaper does follow the rules and guidelines that other newspapers use.
6) I'd also like to say that this newspaper is very well done.

Website Review

The website that I looked at was called Lens. This website is a part/extension of the New York Times, but it’s main use is photography. My first impression of this website was that it would include good photographs, but stories that weren’t that interesting to read. That, however, is not true; the articles and captions are very well written. The intention that is behind this website is to show important events that occurred with photographs and stories. On this website, the articles are written about events that have happened all around the world. The average viewer, by viewing the website, can receive information about interesting events, and high quality photographs to go with the story. The stories, on this website, vary in length and topics, so one can find something that interests them. If you were to view this website, then you can also see the pictures of that week, and the captions provide information about what happened in that particular photograph. The pictures of the week are always very well taken, and cool to look at. That is not only because they describe what occurred that week, but because those pictures are the best ones to do so. I don’t think that I will add this website to my bookmarks because I don’t enjoy reading articles very much. However, the website has very good photos that are captivating to look at and find the story behind them out. I would recommend this website if you want to learn about important events that have happened around the world, and look at some great photographs.

I would rate this website a five out of a scale of five. I gave it that rating because the stories are well written, and pictures are well taken.

This is one of my favorite photos from this website. It was part of The Week in Pictures: Feb10, 2017 post, and I think that it describes what’s going on right now very well. It is a picture of a border wall that is already put up in Harlingen Texas. This photo is really well taken because it shows the beautiful starry sky and then you can see the fence sticking up. It looks kind of unreal because it was taken so well. It’s a simple picture, but it speaks for itself about what is going on. I chose to share this picture on my blog because I really like how it looks and the angle it was taken at. I especially like how it was taken at night so you can see all the stars. I think that it perfectly encompasses what is going on in the United States these days.
