1) The man that was killed by the subway was pushed onto the tracks, in the way of the train, by a panhandler. The photographer was able to take this photo because he tried helping the man, but he wasn't strong enough, so he tried using the camera flash to attract the attention of the driver of a train, and got the pictures while using the flash to try and stop the train.
2) The photographer was able to take the photo because he was in the location that this was occurring, and was trying to use the flash of the camera to stop the driver of the train. This allowed him to take a photo, and use the flash to try and stop the train.
3) I think that the man should've tried harder to help the man, and not worry about using the flash to slow down the train, because once you see a train, they can't slow down in time to stop before they reach you. However, I know that as being a photographer, you're there to observe, and you shouldn't interact with the subjects.
4) I don't think the photographer did the best to help the man in this situation because he could've got help from others to help get the man out once he saw the man being pushed. Also, like I said above, using the flash to try and stop the train wouldn't have worked because a train can't stop that fast.
5) I think as long as the family was okay with it, that it was okay for the New York Post to run the photo as the front cover. This is because it was the best photo to show what happened, and to give the best story, and since it was taken, it should be used.
6) To a photojournalist, capturing life as it happens is more important than stopping bad things from happening, because that's the job of a photojournalist. They're supposed to document things as they see, not save lives.
7) However, I think that it can be acceptable for a photographer to involve him/herself in a situation that he or she photographs if it means saving someone's life. They're doing their job by taking the photograph, and doing what most would consider a morally right thing to do, saving/helping someone else's life, but only if necessary.
8) I think that photographers should mostly stay away from influencing events as they happen because they're there to take pictures of an event and how it happened, and accurately display what's going on in a situation.
9) I think the most appropriate response for a photographer in this situation is that if you should continue to keep taking photographs, if like the photographer said, there's no way for you to help the man in danger.

Deadlines, ARGGH
http://wonderopolis.org/wonder/why-are-they-called-deadlines
1) The origins of the word deadline are from around the time of the Civil War, in which it meant lines that don't move.
2) Missing today's deadline for will cause your work to not be graded, and possibly will affect your final grade.
3) I haven't had issues meeting deadlines for other classes or turning in work.
4) I don't miss deadlines.
5) I did meet today's deadline, but homework from other classes, guitar, and sports prevented me from getting the pictures done earlier.
6) To complete this task as quickly as possible, I want to stay on task and not have interruptions.
https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/get-started/inside-the-classroom/8-ways-to-take-control-of-your-time
1) The suggestion that would help me be more efficient is not get sidetracked.
2) The suggestion that would be the hardest for me to complete is to not get sidetracked.
3) I'm a morning person.
3A) The problems I might run into, due to the fact that I'm more productive at night, are being tired from a long day, and other activities that I have to do.
4) I can create a dedicated study time for myself by putting down electronics and getting rid of distractions for a certain time every night.
5) Three things I could do to eliminate distractions are to put away my music, put away my phone, and put away the food.
https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/get-started/inside-the-classroom/take-control-of-homework
1) There are correlations to taking control of my homework and time management, for example: if I manage my time, then I can get my homework done faster, and make time to control/do my homework.
2) My ideal study setting is at my desk in my room; and the mood is quiet, but not too quiet, with no distractions.
3) My biggest distraction when it comes to studying are my phone and everything on it.
4) Three things I could do to help with those distractions are: put away my phone, make time for breaks to be on my phone, and put my phone on silent.

Another Photo of Hers |
1) I chose this image because I like the angle that it's taken at, and how the photographer focused on the subject. The contrast of blacks and whites caught my eye.
2) This photo looks like it came from a movie or T.V. show, but Cindy Sherman positioned herself in a way meant to showcase the way photos can allow you to become something you're not. In this photo, Cindy Sherman took this self-portrait as a type of performance art.
3) Cindy Sherman took this photo as a self-portrait, used to change her identity. The photo is meant to captivate viewers with pictures in familiar places, but to deceive them at the same time. The subject of her photos was always herself, but she changed the way she looked, or her identity.

5 Websites
1) The Oldest Living Things in the World
http://www.rachelsussman.com/oltw/
This website was created by Rachel Sussman, who travels the world with biologists to take pictures of organisms that are over 2000 years old. She thinks of the organisms as if they're people that she's taking portrait photographs of. On this website, there are many different organisms that are very old, in their natural environments. The photographs are from many different continents, and they all vary in age. I learned what some very old organisms look like, and not to judge an organism only by its appearance, because all of these organisms have been on this planet longer than we have. I also learned another purpose for taking photographs, which is to use it for biology to capture the lifespan of a particular photograph.
This is my favorite photograph:
I picked this photograph because I like how the stromatolites form a pattern of repetition, and I like how the photograph was angled, so you could see the foreground and background. The rules of photography that I see in this photograph are: repetition, and creating depth. This photo was taken by Rachel Sussman in Australia.
2) 6 Types of Photos Every Photographer Should Know How to Make
http://petapixel.com/2014/12/01/6-types-photos-know-make/
http://petapixel.com/2014/12/01/6-types-photos-know-make/
This website explains different skills in photography that can enhance your photographs and make them more interesting. The website teaches you how to make a fake tilt and shift photo, how to make a forced perspective photo, how to make a long exposure landscape photo, how to make a digital infrared photo, how to make a double exposure portrait photo, and how to make a 360 degree polar panorama. You make a fake tilt and shift photo by applying a gradient blur to the photo in Photoshop. you make a forced perspective photo by placing the subject in a way to which they look like they're merged with an object. You make a long exposure landscape photo by using a Neutral Density filter which blocks light, a tripod, and crop the photo to a square. You make a digital infrared photo by using an IR filter or applying the infrared affect in photoshop. You make a double exposure portrait photo by using a multiple exposure mode that allows you to combine two photos. You make a 360 degree polar panorama by taking multiple pictures that you stitch together in Photoshop's Photomerge. I learned many techniques to make my photographs more interesting on this website.
This is my favorite photo:
I like this photo because I like how creative the photo is, and how it looks like an optical illusion. The rules of photography that were followed are: leading lines, creating depth, and viewpoint. This photo was taken by Kenzie Suanders.
3) 10 Photography Resolutions for the New Year

http://petapixel.com/2014/12/31/10-photography-resolutions-new-year/
This website shows several ways to make your photography better and how to become a more confident photographer. Some things that are mentioned are: get better with photoshop; stop believing that your photographs aren't good; and to take more photos of loved ones/people that you know, that way your photos can mean more to you, and possibly turn out better. The website also says to use your photographs "for better," meaning to donate your photographs to charity. Another thing that was mentioned was to print out your photographs so that you can see them on a bigger scale, and to keep them for memories. I learned to not be so negative about my photos.
This is my favorite photo:
I like this photo because I like how the meaning, to me, seems to be lonely, yet determined. The rules that are followed are: leading lines, and creating depth. This photograph was taken by Jenna Martin.
4) The Disorienting Beauty of Spiral Staircases in Old Abandoned Buildings

http://petapixel.com/2014/12/19/disorienting-beauty-spiral-staircases-old-abandoned-buildings/
This website many different photographs of spiral staircases in old abandoned buildings. Christian Richter, the photographer, is an architecture photographer, and he enjoys finding the beauty in spiral staircases. All of his photos are taken from the top of the staircase, looking down, for he finds that they look both "beautiful and disorienting," when taken from that viewpoint. Each of the photographs are unique, and show a different kind of beautiful staircase. I learned from this website how to find the beauty in simple things.
This is my favorite photo:
I like this photo because I like how the leaves on the staircase help enhance the beauty of the spiral staircase in an old building. This photo follows repetition, viewpoint, and leading lines. This photograph is by Christian Richter.
5) 7 Tips to Shooting Great Portrait Photographs
http://blog.phowd.com/2014/09/7-tips-shooting-great-portrait-photographs/
http://blog.phowd.com/2014/09/7-tips-shooting-great-portrait-photographs/
This website teaches you how to make your portrait photography look better and how to make it be more interesting. The tips include breaking the ice, bringing the model out of their comfort zone, having the subject look of camera, using negative space, breaking the rules of photography, and tilting the horizon line. I think the most useful tip is to break the ice with the model because that way the photos won't look as forced and as boring. However, I do believe that bringing the model out of their comfort zone is very important also, in order to have the photographs more unique and interesting. From this website, I learned how to improve my technique on portrait photographs.
This is my favorite photo:
I like this photo because I like how the subject isn't looking directly at the camera, and I like how the photographer played with the model's expression. The rules that are followed are rule of thirds, simplicity, cropping, and viewpoint. This photo was taken by Rajib Mukherjee.

Local Austin Photographers
The photography company I picked is Cory Ryan Photography which consists of two photographers, Cory and Gia. Cory loves her job, partially due to the fact that it includes getting to meet many wonderful people. She considers pictures to be very important so that you can have memories to look back at in the future. Gia also loves her job and all it inhibits, including the people and the destinations that she gets to travel to.
Their style of photography is very unique because they try to make their wedding pictures abnormal and more interesting, compared to the ones that you normally see. They consider their photographs to be modern and stylish, and hope to capture the essence of Austin. They want the photographs to include all the moments that come with having a wedding.
I like the photographs that they have taken because they're different and more interesting to look at than the typical wedding photos. All the pictures are vibrant and show different stages involved in a wedding, as opposed to just photos of the bride and groom dancing. They came up with a way to make the photographs unique, and that's why I like them.

Magazine Preview Assignment- Magazines Part 2
The main attributes of an Image Based cover type are to have a photograph as the biggest and most important part of the cover. The photograph is the biggest part and is like a background. The type of photograph has to make sense with what the magazine is about. The main attributes of an Illustration Based cover type are to have the most important/biggest part of the cover be a background that's drawn or computer generated, instead of a photograph. The picture is the main background and shows something funny usually. The main attributes of Type Based cover type are to present the information using shocking and powerful text instead of images. The main attributes of a Concept Based cover type are to use a mix of the other cover types and to make the covers funny and understandable to readers.
The relationship between words and photos on a cover of a magazine is to have them work together to make the cover interesting and appealing to a reader. This is important so that people like the covers, and then possibly buy the magazine.

Magazine Preview Assignment- My Favorite Cover
My Favorite Cover:
The New York Times Magazine, November 24, The Flight Risk
Photographer: Martin Schoeller
Designer: Arem Duplessis
"For this cover story on the U.S. women’s ski-jumping team, we featured the Olympic hopeful Sarah Hendrickson as photographed by Martin Schoeller. Schoeller captures the competitive spirit of Hendrickson, who wears her competition gear, in her body posture and intense gaze."
My Critique:
I like this portrait cover a lot because I like how the background is plain so that way you can really focus on the subject and the bold colors. The fact that the subject is in her competition gear and the way she looks at the camera goes along with the bold and intense look of the cover. That communicates that the subject is powerful, and the way that the light shines on her and the bold colors are very vibrant add to that. The cover looks very bold due to the way that the subject is fierce her posture is perfect, and the intense look in her eyes.

American Soldier
A) The most powerful image is Down and Dirty, where Ian Fisher is praying that God will help make his life easier or as he says, "I've been praying that God takes this stuff off my back." I think this image is the most powerful because it shows how he fights through the pain and how he deals with the struggles that he encounters.
B) The images work together to tell a story because they show his journey through his career fighting for his country and what happens when he comes home. The pictures display all the emotions that he experienced from happy to sad to tough.
C) The captions enhance the photos because they tell you exactly what's going on in the photos so you can better understand the meaning and what's happening in that photo.
D) Ian Fisher graduates high school, ready to join the Army and fight for his country. Fisher gets enlisted to the army, and has to say goodbye to his family before he leaves for 14 weeks of training. The beginning days in the army are tough, and his childhood injury comes back to hurt him. Fisher and his squad go through basic training and receive their guns, to then take place in a stimulated explosion of a village. Fisher's Drill Sergeant reveals that he got attached to Fisher because he was a good kid who came a long way. There are weeks of hard training, and when he comes home to his father, he reveals that he has a drug addiction, then later turns himself in to his commander. When Fisher comes home from Iraq, he has a large welcoming ceremony, then gets engaged to his girlfriend, Devin.
E) In the photos where Ian is the main subject, the verbs are usually in present tense for the first sentence of the caption, and past tense for the second sentence of the caption.
F)
1. The captions are usually 2 sentences.
2. The first sentence tells what's going on and who, what, when, where, why, and how.
3. The second sentence gives background information that we can't tell from just looking at the photo.
4. The third sentence gives more background information from a quote.
5. Some of the captions do include quotes.
6. No captions have 4 sentences.
G) I think it's possible to tell a story with just pictures and captions because the pictures should tell a story themselves, and the captions provide more background information, which is what makes a story.
H) I think people bother writing stories if you can make one with just pictures and captions because the stories will tell you more than you could learn from a picture and a few sentences in the caption. So, it's because a caption only has a few sentences, but a story has many more sentences that can provide more information.
